The Charcoal Steak House was founded in 1956 by Delmer (Del) and Ortha Wideman as the Charcoal Pit, a 42-seat eatery. Renamed Charcoal Steak House in 1958, it moved to a 250-seat venue in 1962 and to its current location at 2980 King Street East in 1976. Now operated by the next generation — Tim and Tom Wideman — as the Charcoal Group of Restaurants. Del Wideman retired in 1991 and passed away in 2022 at age 93. A Kitchener institution for over 65 years.
